Most people are surprised at the sometimes limited options they have for vinyl siding colors. Although the vinyl material used in the manufacture of siding can be made in almost any color imaginable, manufacturers need to know that a particular color of siding will be popular enough to justify the cost of setting up and running another production line, inventory costs and marketing. It’s why you won’t find a lot of hot pink vinyl siding!
However, even with a limited palette of colors to choose from, it’s still important that you consider all the implications of the color you choose. But before you start, remember that there are no rules. In the end, the vinyl siding color you choose is entirely up to you and your personal tastes. Don’t just choose what’s recommended by others. Go with what you like.
But it’s still good to learn as much as you can about the different colors of vinyl and what to consider when trying to decide which one you prefer.
Light vs. Dark
The first step in choosing the best color is to decide if you want it lighter or darker. The color of your roof, trim, doors and windows may help you decide which way you to go. But they can’t tell you whether to choose a dark or light color because it’s up to you how much contrast you want to create. If the other external features of your home are light, you would choose a darker vinyl siding color to create a lot of contrast and a lighter color, similar to the other features, for less contrast.
Darker vinyl siding tends not to last as long as lighter colored siding. Darker colors retain more of the sun’s heat energy. That means darker siding is subject to greater temperature variations, which can make it break down sooner. However, as more advancements in vinyl compounds are made, even darker colors can last a very long time.
You can still create contrast with lighter colored roofing, eaves, doors and windows and lighter colored siding by choosing complementary colors or by using different shades of the same color.
