Repairing A Roof Tile – Tips

If you have a tiled roof then you have to pay more attention to the maintenance and upkeep of your roof tiles. Tiles are one of the best roofing materials, but they crack easily and might need constant repair work.

However, the greatest advantage of having a tiled roof is that it is easy to replace or repair the tiles when they get bad. When other kinds of roofs like asphalt roofs or wooden roofs get damaged, the entire roof may need repairing or replacing. There are a lot of factors that need to be considered when it comes to repairing a roof tile.

When you check your roof, check it tile by tile

When you have a tiled roof, you have to take that extra effort to check every tile one by one. This is necessary to ensure that every damaged area or crack is found before it gets worse. Furthermore, tiles tend to break when they crack and it is important to identify the broken tiles and replace them before the damage gets out of hand.

A slight crack needs to be repaired immediately

Always remember that even a tiny crack has to be attended to immediately. Minor tile cracks weaken the entire tile and might put pressure on the other tiles. Depending on the size of the crack, you can either choose to seal the crack or replace the tile.

Keep extra tiles handy

Whenever you get new tiles for your roof, keep extra tiles handy. By purchasing extra tiles you will be fully prepared when it comes to repairing a roof tile at a later stage.  That’s because when a tile needs to be repaired or replaced, you will already have the matching tile ready.

Replace tiles that are damaged

When you notice that a tile is damaged, it is necessary to replace the tile. The process of replacing a tile is easy. You just have to pry the damaged tile out with a flat hammer. Use a good sealant to put the fresh tile into place. Make sure you replace tiles only when the weather is dry. This will ensure that the sealant or glue sticks properly and the effect lasts longer.

Secure replaced tiles or repaired tiles with nails

It helps to reinforce the tiles on the roof with nails. If the tile is small in size, use a single nail for each tile. There usually are readymade holes on the tile for the nails.

Repairing a roof tile will be easier once you know how to go about it.
