4 Tips for an Effective Spring Roof Inspection

Considering how bad the winter was here in Toronto and the GTA, you were probably hoping more than usual for spring to arrive. At least until you finally get outside and realize how much work is needed around the house. And if you want your roof to last as long as possible, a spring roof inspection will be on your list of things to do.

If that sounds like yet another home maintenance cost, you don’t necessarily need a Toronto roofing company to do the job. A DIY inspection can give you a good idea of the condition of your roof. If you suspect any potential problems, then you can hire a professional roofing inspector or roofing contractor to look into it for you.

How to Do a Spring Roof Inspection

The spring is a good time to do an inspection because your roof has just endured a severe winter. If you manage to catch potential roof damage, you may be able to do some minor repairs to fix the problem. That way, you won’t have to replace your roof as soon as you would if you didn’t find and fix the roofing damage.

1. Do a Walk Around the House – Take a walk around your house checking the roof for signs of damage. You can also check the ground around your home for any asphalt shingles that may have fallen or blown off the roof.
2. Look for Cracked, Curled, Buckled or Broken Shingles – Of course, the shingles on your roof are your home’s first line of defence against the elements. Any hint of damaged or missing shingles should be looked into as soon as possible to stop the roof leaking.
3. Dark Areas Might Be Moss or Algae – Either way, they can be damaging to your roof.
4. Check and Clean Your Eavestroughs, Look for Granule Loss – OK, this may fall into maintenance more than just an inspection, but the better your roofing system is getting water away from your home, the drier your home will be. Safely use a ladder to look into your eavestrough for debris and clear out any you find. While you’re doing that, look for deposits of granules that have come off the surface of the roofing shingles. That could be a sign of ageing shingles.
