How to Protect Your Roof and Attic from Mold, Mildew & Fungus Growth
Home Maintenance Tips Roofing SafetyThe roof on your home has a tough job to do. Not only must it keep you and your family warm and dry for many years, but it needs to do so while being completely exposed to the harshest weather conditions.
And the weather conditions here in Toronto and the GTA can be one of your roof’s and attic’s worst enemies. Damp conditions, especially during fall, winter and spring, can make your roof and attic ideal breeding grounds for a host of living organisms, including mold, mildew and other fungi.
Not only are these organisms harmful to your roof and its support structure, they can be harmful to your health. So it makes sense to do everything you can to prevent them from ever starting to grow. Here are a few ways that you can protect your roof and attic from mold, mildew and fungus growth.
1. Install a Shingle Shield
A Shingle Shield is a strip of metal made of 99% zinc. When a shingle Shield is installed on your roof, it releases invisible zinc oxide which then runs down your roof. Zinc oxide is a fungistatic compound that kills and prevents the growth of moss, algae and fungi.
2. Proper Attic Ventilation
Mold, mildew and fungi need moisture to germinate and grow. When moisture gets into your attic, it sets up the perfect conditions for the growth of these organisms. One way to help prevent their growth is to make sure your attic has enough ventilation to keep it as dry as possible.
3. Maintain and Repair Your Roof
Moisture can get under your roofing shingles and into your attic even if you don’t have a full-blown leak. Worn or damaged shingles can let in enough water to help mold, mildew and fungi grow without you ever knowing there’s a problem. Make sure to inspect your roof regularly and replace any damaged, broken or missing shingles as soon as possible.
