RV Roof Repair

A RV is a great way to see the country, take a trip, or spend your golden years. However, some people may forget about one of the most important aspects of their RV, the roof, until there is a problem. If you are experiencing a problem with leaks in your RV roofing, here are some things to consider before doing the repair yourself, and how to possibly prevent it in the future:

RV Roofing is Flimsy

As much as any RV owner hates to admit, the roofing system in many RVs is not made to withstand the weight of a person. You can actually cause more damage by climbing up on the roof of your RV. If you do decide to take the risk, anyway, you should step lightly from one roof rafter to the next, or lay down a piece of plywood before beginning work. The safest bet for you is to complete all work from the side of your RV while on a ladder.

Keep Your Roof Clear

Since RV roofing is so flimsy, it is important that you remove heavy snow from the top of your RV whenever possible. When doing this, use a heavy-duty ladder, and remove snow from the edge of your RV. If you climb on top of the roof, you might only make your roof collapse from the weight of both a person and the snow. Only use a plastic shovel for removing snow. A metal one could possible tear the roof, making the problem worse. Leave any ice. Don’t attempt to break it up or off. You will only damage the seal of your roof, causing leaks.

Special Products

You will need special products to complete this job. Since RV roofing is not the same as the roofing used on houses, you can’t use the same products. Special cleaners and patching products are often recommended, and you should always use only those. Failure to do so may result in the leak still being there and a huge mess.

Resealing the roof seal

You can normally repair the roof seam if that is where the damage is. Simply use roof repair tape, and carefully follow the instructions.
