Roof Problems You Can Learn in a Quick Walk Around Your House

Tips on what to do about roof problems from Chouinard bros

Especially if you own an older home, if you’ve been a homeowner for more than a few years, you might have become a bit of an expert in certain areas of home maintenance and renovations. Maybe you’ve had to fix small roof problems, a leaky faucet, replace a window screen of simply try to grow some grass, but, in any case, as you do each one, you learn about it and get to know how to do it best.

Being an expert means you can look at something and get an idea of its condition. After a few summers, you’ll know that the patch of grass that’s a slightly different shade will likely suffer most if you don’t water the lawn regularly. Or a window screen that’s been stretched too tightly will need replacement just like if it was torn.

So What Roof Problems Can You Tell by Looking?

First, if you’re a regular reader of this blog, you’ll know how to spot signs of damage to your roof. But, aside from obvious things like missing shingles, what can you tell just by looking at your roof?

A lot. And here are just a few.

1. Your Eavestroughs are Blocked

When looking at your roof as you walk around the house check the sides of your eavestroughs. If you see bits of leaves, pine needles or other debris clinging to the side of them, your eavestroughs are probably blocked. When it rains and the water backs up, it overflows the eavestroughs, carrying the debris with it.

2. Your Roof is Getting Old

Again, aside from the obvious, like actual damage, you can still tell if your roof needs replacing just by looking at it. If you noticed any raised shingles, or shingles with curled corners, they are usually the first signs of aging, and of the fact that you’ll need a new roof sooner than later.

3. Your Attic Isn’t Well Insulated

You’ll need to wait for the first snowfall for this one, but when it comes, check your roof and compare it to your neighbour’s. If the snow melts from your roof sooner than it does on your neighbour’s roof, your roof isn’t as well insulated.

Make No Mistake.
